Common Aamaal at each of the three Qadr Nights

First: It is recommended to bathe oneself at each of the Qadr Nights. According to ‘Allamah al-Majlisi, it is preferable to perform the bathing at sunset so as to be ready for the Isha’ Prayer with a bathing.

Second: It is recommended to offer a two unit prayer reciting at each unit Surah al-Faatehah once and repeating Surah al-Tawheed seven times. After the accomplishment of the prayer, the following imploration should be repeated seventy times:

I implore for Allah’s forgiveness and I repent before Him.

خدا سے بخشش چاہتا اور اس کے حضور توبہ کرتا ہوں۔

According to a Hadith reported from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), Almighty Allah will forgive one who offers this prayer and will forgive his parents before he leaves his place.

Third: It is recommended to open a copy of the Holy Qur’an between one’s hands and say the following:

O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Your revealed Book and that which is in it,

خدایا میں تیری کتابِ منزل اور جو کچھ بھی اس میں ہے کہ

and Your Great Name and Your (other) most excellent names are in it,

اس کے واسطے سے میں سوال کرتا ہوں کہ اس میں تیرے بزرگ نام اور تیرے اسماء حسنیٰ ہیں

and in it there is that which warns and gives hope,.

اور ہر وہ شئے ہے جس سے خوف یا امید وابستہ ہوتی ہے

to include me with those who have been set free from the Hellfire by You.

مجھے آتشِ جہنّم سے آزاد ہونے والوں میں قرار دے دے۔

Then, one may pray God to fulfill one’s desires.

Fourth: It is recommended to put a copy of the Holy Qur’an on the head and say the following:

O Allah, in the name of this Qur'an,

خدایا اس قرآن کا واسطہ

in the name of the one through whom You sent it,

اور اس کا واسطہ جسے قرآن دے کر بھیجا ہے

in the name of every believing individual You have praised in it,

اور ان مومنین کا واسطہ جن کی اس قرآن میں تعریف کی ہے۔

and in the name of their duties towards You,

اور تیرے اس حق کا واسطہ

for no one knows their duties towards You better than You do

جو ان سب پر ہے کہ تیرے حق کو تجھ سے بہتر کوئی نہیں جانتا ہے۔

Then, one should repeat each of the following ten times:

for Your sake, O Allah,

اے اللہ تیرا واسطہ،

for the sake of Muhammad,

محمدؐ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of 'Ali,

علیؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of Fatimah,

فاطمہؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of al-Hasan,

حسنؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of al-Husayn,

حسینؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of 'Ali ibn al-Husayn,

علی بن الحسینؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of Muhammad ibn 'Ali,

محمد بن علیؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of Ja'far ibn Muhammad,

جعفر بن محمدؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of Musa ibn Ja'far,

موسیٰ بن جعفرؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of 'Ali ibn Musa,

علی بن موسیٰؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of Muhammad ibn 'Ali,

محمد بن علیؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of 'Ali ibn Muhammad,

علی بن محمدؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of al-Hasan ibn 'Ali,

حسن بن علیؑ کا واسطہ،

for the sake of al-Hujjah.

حجّت القائمؑ کا واسطہ۔

One should then pray Almighty Allah to fulfill one’s desires.

Fifth: It is advisable to visit the holy tomb of Imam al-Husayn (a.s.) at these nights. A Hadith, in this respect, reads that at the Qadr Nights, a caller from the heavens will call from the Seventh Sky and, specifically, from the centre of the Holy Throne that Almighty Allah shall forgive whoever visits the tomb of al-Husayn (a.s.).

Sixth: It is highly advisable to spend the whole three Qadr Nights with acts of worship. A Hadith reads that one who spends the whole Qadr Nights with acts of worship will have all his sins forgiven even if they are as many as stars, as heavy as mountains, and as weighty as seawater.

Seventh: In order to win its remarkable reward, it is recommended to offer the one hundred unit prayer. It is preferable to recite at these units Surah al-Faatehah once and repeat Surah al-Tawheed ten times.

Eighth: It is recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer:

O Allah, surely I am at this evening Your passive slave;

خدایا میں نے اس طرح شام کی ہے کہ میں تیرا بندۂ ذلیل ہوں۔

I have no control of hurt or good to myself

میرے اختیار میں نہ فائدہ ہے اور نہ نقصان

and I cannot drive back any evil from myself.

اور نہ کسی بلا کو ٹال سکتا ہوں۔

I testify to this against myself.

میں خود اپنے بارے میں گواہ ہوں

To You do I confess of my powerlessness

اور اعتراف کرتا ہوں اپنی کمزوری

and my feebleness.

اور بے چارگی کا

So, (please do) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

محمدؐ و آل محمدؐ پر رحمت نازل فرما

and fulfill what You have promised me,

اور پورا فرما دے جو تو نے مجھ سے وعدہ کیا ہے

as well as all the believing men and women;

یا مومنین و مومنات سے ،

that is Your forgiveness at this night,

آج کی رات مغفرت کا وعدہ کیا ہے اُسے پورا فرما دے۔

and accomplish that which You have conferred upon me,

اور جو کچھ مجھے دیا ہے اس کی تکمیل فرما دے کہ

for I am Your slave— the poor, the humble,

میں تیرا بندۂ مسکین

the weak, the needy, and the humiliated. .

و ذلیل و ضعیف و فقیر ہوں۔

O Allah, (please) do not make me negligent of the mention of You as regards that which You have bestowed upon me,

خدا مجھے نعمتوں میں اپنی یاد کو بھلا دینے والا

do not make me inadvertent to Your favors to me as regards that which You have given me,

اور عطاؤں میں اپنے احسانات سے غافل ہونے والا نہ بنا دینا۔

do not make me despair of Your responding to me, even if such response is postponed,

میں دعاؤں کی قبولیت سے مایوس نہ ہوجاؤں چاہے اس میں تاخیر ہی کیوں نہ ہوجائے۔

whether I be in prosperity, adversity,

راحت ہو یا تکلیف،

hardship, comfort,

شدّت ہو یا آسانی۔

wellbeing, ordeal,

عافیت ہو یا بلا،

misery, or bliss.

تنگی ہو یا نعمتیں۔

Verily, You are the Hearer of prayers.

تو ہر دعا کا سننے والا ہے۔

Al-Kaf’ami has narrated that Imam Zayn al-’Abidin(a.s.) used to say this supplicatory prayer very frequently at the Qadr Nights while sitting, standing, genuflecting, and prostrating.

‘Allamah al-Majlisi has mentioned that the most favorable rite at the Qadr Nights is to implore for Almighty Allah’s forgiveness, to mention Him, to pray for the settlement of one’s worldly and religious affairs as well as for one’s parents, relatives, and brethren-in-faith; the dead and the alive, and to invoke blessings upon the Holy Prophet and his Household.

According to some narrations, it is recommended to say the famous supplicatory prayer known as Dua al-Jawshan al-Kabir, at the three Qadr Nights.

It has been also narrated that when he was asked about the best prayer that one may say at the Qadr Night, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, “Pray for good health.”
