Dua Simaat

The Supplication of the Attributes.

This supplication is also called Dua al-Shubur. It is advisable to say this supplication at the last hour of Fridays. It is well-known that Dua al-Simat is one of the famous supplications, which was regularly said by the past scholars. This supplication is recorded in Shaykh al-Tusi’s book of Misbah al-Mutahajjid, Sayyid Ibn Tawus’s book of Jamal al-Usbu’, and al-Kaf’ami’s books through an authentic series of narrators on the authority of Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman al-’Umari, one of the Four Envoys of Imam al-Mahdi, peace be upon him. The supplication has been also reported from Imam Muhammad al-Baqir and Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq, peace be upon them. With commentary, al-Majlisi has also narrated the supplication in his famous book of Bihar al-Anwar. The following form is quoted from Shaykh al-Tusi’s Misbah al-Mutahajjid:

O Allah, I beseech You by Your Name, the most great, most majestic,

خدایا تجھ سے تیرے عظیم تر، باعزّت و جلال

most magnificent, and most noble;

و کرامت کے نام کے واسطہ سے سوال کرتا ہوں

if You are besought thereby to open the closed doors of the sky, they will be opened with Your mercy,

جس نام کے ذریعہ اگر آسمان کے بند دروازوں پر دعا کی گئی تو رحمت سے کھل گئے

if You are besought thereby to remove the narrow doors of the heavens for relief, they will be opened wide,

اور زمین کے تنگ دروازوں پر دعا کی گئی تو وسعتیں پیدا ہوگئیں۔

if You are besought thereby to make easy the difficulty, it will be easy,

دشواریوں میں ان کے ذریعہ دعا کی گئی تو آسانیاں پیدا ہوگئیں۔

if You are besought thereby to restore the dead to life, they will rise from their graves,

مردوں پر دم کیے گئے تو زندگی پیدا ہوگئی۔

if You are besought thereby to remove misery and adversity, they will be removed.

مصیبت اور آفت کو دور کرنے کے لیے دعا کی گئی تو رنج و غم دور ہوگئے۔

I also beseech You in the name of the Majesty of Your Noble Face;

تیری ذات کے جلال کا واسطہ

the Noblest and most Honored of all faces

جو سب سے زیادہ مکرّم اور سب سے زیادہ صاحبِ عزّت ہے۔

before Whom all faces bow down in submission,

جس کے سامنے تمام چہرے ذلیل ہیں

all necks bend down in reverence,

اور جس کے سامنے تمام گردنیں جھکی ہوئی ہیں۔

all sounds yield,

آوازیں اس کے سامنے دب گئی ہیں

and all hearts tremble out of fear of You.

اور دل اس کے خوف سے لرزرہے ہیں

I also beseech You by Your Might

تیری اس قوّت کا واسطہ

by which You prevent the sky from falling on the earthexcept with Your permission,

جس کے ذریعہ آسمان کو زمین پر گرنے سے روک دیا ہے

and control the heavens and the earth so closely that they cannot move away from their positions,

اور زمین وآسمان کو زائل نہیں ہونے دیا ہے۔

by Your Will, which the whole world obeys,

تیری اس مشیّت کا واسطہ جس کے سامنے عالمین سر بسجود ہیں۔

by Your Word by which You have created the heavens and the earth,

تیرے اس کلمہ کا واسطہ جس کے ذریعہ آسمان و زمین کو پیدا کیا ہے

by Your Wisdom with which You have created the wonderful things,

اور اس حکمت کا واسطہ جس سے عجائبات کو ایجاد کیا ہے۔

created darkness, made it night,

ظلمت کو بناکر اُسے رات قرار دیا ہے

made night the time of quiet and rest,

اور رات کو سکون بنادیا ہے۔

created light, made it daylight,

نور کو پیدا کرکے اُسے دن بنادیا ہے

made day the time of movement and observation,

اور دن کو پھیل جانے کا ذریعہ بنادیا ہے۔

created the sun, made the sun light,

آفتاب کو پیدا کرکے اُسے ضیاء بنادیا ہے

created the moon, made the moon of light,

اور قمر کو خلق کرکے اُسے نور بنادیا ہے۔

created heavenly bodies,

کواکب کو ایجاد کرکے

made them fixed stars, planets, lamps for guidance at night, means of decoration, and missiles,

ستاروں، بروج، چراغوں اور زینتوں کا ذریعہ بنادیا ہے

created for them east and west,

ان کے لیے مشرق و مغرب بنائے ہیں۔

created for them places of ascendancy and orbits,

ان کے لیے طلوع کرنے کی جگہ آگے بڑھنے کی منزل بنائی ہے۔

created for them a firmament and spheres,

ان کے لیے فلک اور گردش کے مقامات طے کیے ہیں

fixed for them stages in the heaven withexcellent fixing,

آسمانوں میں منزلیں بنائیں تو بہترین بنائیں۔

shaped the stars withexcellent shaping,

صورتیں بنائیں تو حسین ترین بنائیں

measured them through Your Names withexact measurement,

اور سب کو اپنے شمار میں رکھا

designed through Your wisdom a system for them withexcellent design,

اور سب کی تدبیر اپنی حکمت سے کی اور بہترین تدبیر کی۔

controlled the heavenly bodies through the influence of night and the influence of day,

سب کو مسخّر رکھا آسمان کی رات اور دن کے اقتدار

and through hours, making them a means for the reckoning of years and counting,

اور ساعت کے ذریعہ سالوں کے حساب کے ذریعہ

and made all people see them alike.

اور سب کی رویت کو تمام لوگوں کے واسطے ایک ہی رویت قرار دیا۔

I beseech You,O Allah, in the name of Your glory

خدایا میں تیری اس بزرگی کا واسطہ دیتا ہوں

with which You addressed Your servant and Messenger, Moses the son of 'Imran ('a) while he was in the company of angels;

جس کے ذریعہ تو نے اپنے بندے اور رسول موسیٰ بن عمران علیہ السلام سے باتیں کیں مقدّسین کی منزل میں

an address even the favorite cherubim could not ever hear,

فرشتوں کے احساس سے بالاتر

above the clouds of light,

مقام پُرنور کے بادلوں کے اوپر

above the box of evidence,

تابوتِ شہادت کے اوپر

within the pillar of fire on Mount Sinai

ستون نار میں اور طور سینا میں

and on Mount Hurith

اور حبل حوریث پر

in the Holy Vale

وادی مقدّس میں

in the sacred tract of land

بقعۂ مبارک میں

to the right of Taurus Mountain through a tree,

طور کے داہنی طرف درخت کے ذریعہ سے

[and again addressed him] on the land of Egypt, after showing nine clear signs,

اور پھر مصر کی سرزمین پر نو روشن نشانیوں کے ساتھ

and on the day You split the sea for the children of Israel,

اور جس دن تو نے بنی اسرائیل کے لیے سمندر کو شگافتہ کیا

and caused springs to flow from a stone, thereby displaying wonders of Your might in a deep sea,

اور ان اُبلنے والے چشموں میں کہ جن کے ذریعہ تو نے بحرِ سوف میں عجائب ایجاد کیے

on the day when You solidified the water of the sea in the midst of the storm,

اور دریاؤں کی گہرائیوں میں پانی کو پتھر کی طرح سخت کردیا

caused the children of Israel to pass by the sea,

اور بنی اسرائیل کو دریا کے اس پار نکال دیا

and fulfilled Your excellent promises made to them because of their calm endurance,

اور اس طرح ان کا وعدہ پورا کیا کہ انھوں نے صبر کیا تھا

made them the master of the East and the West in the earth wherein there are blessings for all the worlds,

اور تو نے انھیں شرق و غرب عالم کا وارث بنادیا جسے عالمین کے لیے بابرکت قرار دیا ہے

drowned Pharaoh, his armies, and boats in the water.

اور فرعون اور اس کے لشکروں اور سواریوں کو غرق دریا کردیا

[I beseech You] by Your Name, the great, the Most Great,

اور تیرے اس عظیم اور بزرگ تر،

the Most Honorable, Most Majestic, and Most Noble,

عزیز، جلیل اور کریم نام کا واسطہ

and by Your Glory with which You revealed Yourself as light to Moses, Your addressee, peace be on him, on Mount Sinai,

اور تیری اس بزرگی کا واسطہ جس کی تجلّی طور سینا پر موسیٰ علیہ السلام کے لیے ظاہر ہوئی

and earlier radiated the light for Abraham, Your sincere friend peace be on him, in the Mosque of al-Khif,

اور اس سے پہلے ابراہیم علیہ السلام کے لیے مسجدِ خیف میں ظاہر ہوئی

and for Isaac, Your chosen Prophet, peace be on him, in Shi' Well,

اور اسحاق علیہ السلام کے لیے چاہِ شیع میں ظاہر ہوئی

and for Your Prophet Jacob, peace be on him, in Bayt II,

اور تیرے نبی یعقوب علیہ السلام کے لیے بیت ایل میں ظاہر ہوئی

and You fulfilled Your promise to Abraham, peace be on him,

اور جس کے ذریعہ تو نے ابراہیم علیہ السلام کے وعدہ کو پورا کیا

Your oath in favor of Isaac,

اور اسحاقؑ کے لیے اپنی قسم کو

Your witnessing favoring Jacob,

اور یعقوب کے لیے اپنی شہادت کو

the fulfillments of Your promise to the faithful believers,

اور مومنین کے لیے اپنے وعدہ کو پورا کردیا

and Your Names with which You accepted the prayers of supplicants,

اور دعا کرنے والوں کے لیے جن کی دعاؤں کو تو نے قبول کرلیا

and by Your Glory, which appeared to Moses, the son of 'Imran, in al-Rumman Dome,

اور تیری اس بزرگی کا واسطہ جو موسیٰ بن عمران علیہ السلام کے لیے قبّۂ رمّان پر ظاہر ہوئی

and by Your Signs, which appeared in the land of Egypt

اور ان نشانیوں کا واسطہ جو زمین مصر پر نمایاں ہوئیں

with great might and victory,

عزّت و غلبہ کے ساتھ۔

with powerful signs,

واضح نشانیوں کے ساتھ

with the display of full command,

اور قوّت و سلطنت کے ساتھ

great power,

عزّت و قدرت کے ساتھ

the affair of the perfect word,

اور کلمۂ تام کی شان کے ساتھ۔

and by Your words with which You do a favor to the inhabitants of the skies and the earth

اور تیرے ان کلمات کا واسطہ جن کے ذریعہ تو نے اہلِ آسمان و زمین

and the people of this world and the Next World,

اور اہلِ دنیا و آخرت پر فضل و کرم کیا ہے

and by Your Mercy with which You bestow graces upon all Your creatures,

اور اس رحمت کا واسطہ جس کے ذریعہ تمام مخلوقات پر احسان کیا ہے

and by Your Power with which You dominate the worlds,

اور اس قوّت کا واسطہ جس کے ذریعے عالمین پر حجّت کو قائم کیا ہے

and by Your Light through fear of which Mount Sinai collapsed,

اور اس نور کا واسطہ جس کے خوف سے طور سینا لرز گیا

and by Your Knowledge, Majesty, Greatness, Honor,

اور تیرے علم و جلال کبریائی و عزّت

and Might, which the earth could not bear,

اور جبروت کا واسطہ جس کا بوجھ زمین نہیں اُٹھا سکتی

the heavens bent down,

اور جس کے سامنے آسمان بھی جھک گئے ہیں

the great depths restrained themselves,

اور جس کے لیے عمیق گہرائیاں بھی لرز گئی ہیں۔

oceans and rivers became stable,

بہتے ہوئے دریا اور نہریں،

mountains yielded,

ٹھہرے ہوئے پہاڑ خاضع ہوگئے ہیں۔

the earth became firm on its shoulders,

زمین اپنے شانوں سمیت خاضع ہوگئی ہے

all creatures surrendered,

اور ساری مخلوقات تسلیم ہوگئی ہیں۔

the winds breathed in their flow,

ہوائیں اپنے چلنے میں مضطرب ہوگئیں۔

and the flaming fires were extinguished in their places,

آگ اپنی منزل پر خاموش ہوگئی۔

and by Your authority through which You are acknowledged to have All-powerfulness all the times

اور تیرے اس اقتدار کا واسطہ جس کے ذریعہ تیرے غلبہ کو پہچانا گیا ہمیشہ ہمیشہ کے لیے

and for which You are praised in the heavens and the earth,

اور تیری حمد کی گئی آسمانوں میں اور زمینوں میں

and by Your word, the Word of Truth, which had became mercy for our father Adam and his offspring,

اور تیرے اس کلمہ کا واسطہ جو کلمۂ صدق ہے جو سب سے پہلے جناب آدم علیہ السلام اور ان کی ذریّت کو عطا کیا گیا تھا

and by Your word that overcame everything,

اور تیرے اس کلمہ کا واسطہ جو ہر شئے پر غالب ہے تیرے نور ذات کا واسطہ

and by the light of Your Face, which when You showed to the Mount,

جس کی تجلّی پہاڑ پر ظاہر ہوئی

You caused it to crush into pieces, whereby Moses fainted and fell down,

تو پہاڑ ریزہ ریزہ ہوگیا اور موسیٰؑ بے ہوش ہوگئے

and by Your Glory, which appeared on Mount Sinai,

اور تیری اس بزرگی کا واسطہ جو طورِ سینا پر ظاہر ہوئی

and through which You addressed Your servant and Messenger, Moses, the son of 'Imran,

جب تو نے اپنے بندہ و رسول موسیٰ بن عمران سے باتیں کیں

and by Your appearance in Sa'ir,

اور تیری اس طلعت کا واسطہ جو مقامِ ساعیر پر نمایاں ہوئی

and by Your appearance on Mount Faran on the heights of the holy ones,

اور تیرے ظہور کا واسطہ جو فاران کی چوٹیوں پر ہوا بلند ترین مقامات پر

When the troops of angels were in rows,

اور صف بستہ ملائکہ کے لشکروں کے ساتھ

and with the submissiveness of the angels glorifying You,

اور تسبیح گذار فرشتوں کے خشوع کے ساتھ

and by Your blessings by which You honored Abraham, Your sincere friend ('a)

اور تیری ان برکتوں کا واسطہ جن کے ذریعہ تو نے اپنے خلیل ابراہیمؑ کو

among the people of Muhammad, Your blessings be upon him and his household,

امّت حضرت محمد صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ میں برکت عطا فرمائی ہے

and You blessed Isaac, Your chosen prophet,

اپنے خاص بندہ اسحاق کو

among the followers of Jesus, peace be on them both,

امّت عیسیٰ میں برکت دی ہے (علیہما السّلام)

and You blessed Jacob, Your favored servant,

اور یعقوب کو

by including him among the followers of Moses, peace be on them both,

امّتِ موسیٰ میں برکت دی ہے(علیہما السّلام)

and blessed Your intimate beloved, Muhammad, may the blessings of Allah be upon him and his Household,

اور اپنے حبیب محمد مصطفیٰ صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہٖ کو

in his offspring, offspring, and people.

ان کی آل اور ذریّت اور امّت میں برکت دی ہے۔

O Allah! Just as we were absent from that but we believe in it honestly and truly,

خدایا ہم جس طرح ان تجلّیات سے غائب رہے اور حاضر نہ رہ سکے مگر ان پر ایمان لے آئے اور ان کو بغیر دیکھے صدق و عدالت کے ساتھ مان لیا

So we beseech You to send Your benedictions upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

تو اب تو محمدؐ و آل محمدؐ پر رحمت نازل فرما

to bless Muhammad and the household of Muhammad,

اور انھیں برکت عنایت فرما،

and to have mercy on Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

ان پر رحمتوں کا نزول فرما

with the most auspicious benedictions, blessings, and mercy that You sent to Abraham and the posterity of Abraham.

جس طرح بہترین صلوات اور رحمت ابراہیمؑ اور آل ابراہیمؑ کو عطا فرمائی ہے کہ

Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious,

تو قابلِ حمد بھی ہے اور صاحبِ بزرگی بھی ہے۔

and Doer of what You will.

جو چاہے وہ کرسکتا ہے۔

You are Powerful over all things.

ہر شئے پر قدرت و اختیار رکھتا ہے۔

You may now beseech Almighty Allah to grant you your personal requests. Then, say the following:

O Allah, in the name of this prayer

خدایا اس دعا کے حق کا واسطہ

and in the name of these Names

اور ان اسماء کے حق کا واسطہ

which none knows their exegesis

جن کی تفسیر کو

or their implicit meanings save You,

اور جن کے باطن کو تیرے علاوہ کوئی نہیں جانتا ہے

(please) send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

محمدؐ و آل محمدؐ پر رحمت نازل فرما

do to me that of which You are worthy,

اور ہمارے ساتھ وہ برتاؤ کرنا جس کا تو اہل ہے۔

do not do to me what I deserve,

وہ برتاؤ نہ کرنا جس کے ہم اہل ہیں۔

forgive my sins—past and future,

ہمارے گذشتہ اور آئندہ گناہوں کو معاف فرمادے۔

increase Your lawful sustenance for me,

رزقِ حلال میں وسعت عطا فرما

and save me from the trouble of wicked men,

اور ہمیں بدترین انسان،

wicked neighbors,

بدترین ہمسایہ ،

wicked companions,

بدترین ساتھی

and wicked rules

اور بدترین سلطان کے شر سے محفوظ رکھنا

Verily, You have power over all that You will to do

تو ہر شئے پر قادر ہے۔

and You have full knowledge of all things.

ہر چیز کا جاننے والا ہے۔

Respond to me, O Lord of the worlds.

آمین یا رب العالمین۔

According to some copies of the supplication, the following statement is added before the latter portion:

O Allah! O All-tender! O Bestower!

اے اللہ اے مہربان اے کرم کرنے والے

O Fashioner of the heavens and the earth!

اے آسمان و زمین کے خالق

O Lord of Majesty and Honor!

اے صاحبِ جلال و اکرام

O most Merciful of all those who show mercy!

اے ارحم الرٰحمین

(O Allah! I beseech You in the name of this prayer)...

خدایا اس دعا کے حق کا واسطہ

and in the name of these Names

اور ان اسماء کے حق کا واسطہ

which none knows their exegesis

جن کی تفسیر کو

or their implicit meanings save You,

اور جن کے باطن کو تیرے علاوہ کوئی نہیں جانتا ہے

(please) send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

محمدؐ و آل محمدؐ پر رحمت نازل فرما

do to me that of which You are worthy,

اور ہمارے ساتھ وہ برتاؤ کرنا جس کا تو اہل ہے۔

do not do to me what I deserve,

وہ برتاؤ نہ کرنا جس کے ہم اہل ہیں۔

forgive my sins—past and future,

ہمارے گذشتہ اور آئندہ گناہوں کو معاف فرمادے۔

increase Your lawful sustenance for me,

رزقِ حلال میں وسعت عطا فرما

and save me from the trouble of wicked men,

اور ہمیں بدترین انسان،

wicked neighbors,

بدترین ہمسایہ ،

wicked companions,

بدترین ساتھی

and wicked rules

اور بدترین سلطان کے شر سے محفوظ رکھنا

Verily, You have power over all that You will to do

تو ہر شئے پر قادر ہے۔

and You have full knowledge of all things.

ہر چیز کا جاننے والا ہے۔

Respond to me, O Lord of the worlds.

آمین یا رب العالمین۔

You may now beseech Almighty Allah to grant you your personal requests. Then, say the following:

Shaykh al-Majlisi has quoted Sayyid Ibn Baqi as saying, in al-Misbah, that the following supplicatory prayer is advisably said after Dua al-Simat:

O Allah! I beseech You in the name of this prayer

خدایا اس دعا کے حق کا واسطہ

and in the name of these Names

اور ان اسماء کے حق کا واسطہ

which none knows their exegesis or interpretation

جن کی تفسیر و تاویل

and none knows their implicit or explicit meanings save You,

اور جن کے باطن و ظاہر کو تیرے علاوہ کوئی نہیں جانتا ہے کہ

to send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

محمدؐ و آل محمدؐ پر رحمت نازل فرما

and to provide me with the good of this world and the Next World.

اور مجھے خیرِ دنیا و آخرت عطا فرما دے۔

You may then mention your need and continue as follows:

Do to me that of which You are worthy

میرے ساتھ وہ برتاؤ کرنا جس کا تو اہل ہے

but do not do to me what I deserve,

اور وہ برتاؤ نہ کرنا جس کا میں اہل ہوں

and exact vengeance from... [so-and-so]

اور میرا انتقام فلاں شخص سے لے لینا۔

You may here mention the name of your enemy

forgive my sins—past and future,

اور میرے تمام سابق و لاحق گناہوں کو معاف کردینا

forgive my parents and all faithful believers—men and women,

اور میرے والدین اور تمام مومنین و مومنات کے گناہوں کو بخش دینا۔

increase Your lawful sustenance for me,

میرے لیے رزقِ حلال میں وسعت عطا فرما

save me from the troubles of wicked men,

اور مجھے بدترین انسان،

wicked neighbors,

بدترین ہمسایہ،

wicked rulers,

بدترین سلطان،

wicked companions,

بدترین ساتھی،

evil days,

بدترین دن

and evil hours,

اور بدترین ساعت کے شر سے محفوظ رکھنا

and exact vengeance for me on everyone who hatches secret plots against me,

جو میرے ساتھ مکر کرے

]on everyone who oppresses me,

یا مجھ پر ظلم کرے

seeks to do injustice to me, my wife,

یا میرے ساتھ میرے اہل

my children, my brothers,

اور اولاد کے ساتھ

my neighbors, and my relatives

میرے بھائیوں اور ہمسایہ کے ساتھ

among faithful men and women

اور میرے قرابتدار مومنین و مومنات کے ساتھ برائی کرنا چاہے

Verily, You have power to do whatever You will to do

ان سے تو انتقام لینا کہ تو ہر شئے پر قادر ہے

and You have full knowledge of all things.

اور ہر چیز کا جاننے والا ہے۔

Respond to me, O Lord of the worlds.

آمین رب العالمین۔

You may then say the following:

O Allah! In the name of this prayer, I beseech You

خدایا اس دعا کے حق کا واسطہ

to grant wealth and affluence to indigent faithful men and women,

فقراء مومنین و مومنات کو مالداری و ثروت عطا فرما۔

recovery and wellbeing to the sick faithful men and women,

جو مومنین و مومنات بیمار ہیں انھیں شفا و صحت عطا فرما۔

bliss and clemency to the living faithful men and women,

جو زندہ ہیں ان کے شامل حال لطف و کرم کردے

remit the sins of, and have mercy on, the deceased faithful men and women,

اور جو مرگئے ہیں ان کی مغفرت فرما اور ان پر رحمت نازل فرما۔

and arrange the return of all faithful travelers with safety and gain,

جو مومنین و مومنات مسافر ہیں انھیں ان کے وطن تک صحت و سلامتی اور کامیابی کے ساتھ پہنچا دے۔

by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

اپنی رحمت کے وسیلہ سے اے ارحم الراحمین

May Allah send blessings to our master Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, and upon his Household, the purified

اللہ ہمارے آقا حضرت محمد خاتم النبیینؐ ان کی عترت طاہرینؑ پر رحمت نازل کر

and send peace upon them in abundant measure.

اور بے شمار سلام نازل کر۔

Shaykh Ibn Fahad says that it is recommended to say the following prayer after Dua al-Simat:

O Allah, I beseech You in the name of the sacredness of this prayer,

خدایا میں تجھ سے اس دعا کی حرمت

the Names mentioned therein,

اور ان اسماء کی حرمت کے وسیلہ جن کا اس میں ذکر نہیں ہے

and the explanation and deep meanings of these names

اور ان مطالب کے واسطہ سے جن پر یہ دعا مشتمل ہے

that none comprehends save You...

اور جن کو تیرے علاوہ کوئی نہیں جانتا ہے یہ سوال کرتا ہوں کہ میرے ساتھ ایسا برتاؤ کرنا۔

You may now mention your personal needs.
